Theatre and Religion is an occasional publication. Papers presented as part of the Religion and Theatre Focus Groups presentations at each National Convention of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) form the basis for selection for this publication. The particular papers in this edition are those presented in a special Festschrift Panel honoring Dr. Wayne Ray Rood. Future editions of Theatre and Religion are scheduled to be selected from presentations on the “Senior Scholars in Religion and Theatre” panels of the National Conferences.
In presenting and publishing these papers we honor Dr. Wayne Ray Rood for his 55 years of formal service given to the integration of Theatre and Theology. In presenting the following papers we honor Wayne in a variety of ways, and from a variety of personal, theological, and theatrical perspectives. All of the participants on this panel have been students of, and have been in productions directed by Dr. Rood -- Wayne. We have all been influenced significantly by his theological approach to the theatrical enterprise as we engaged in the process of creating theatre together. We acknowledge and celebrate the invaluable contribution that Wayne has made to the Religion and Theatre movement over the last 55 years. With great respect and thanksgiving we on the panel acknowledge Wayne’s contribution to our lives both individually, as a mentor and colleague, and corporately as a teacher and practitioner -- of theology and theatre.

The Reverend Dr. Jana Childers is a Professor of Homeletics at San Francisco Theological Seminary. She served as interim Dean of the Faculty there during 1993-94. Jana and George Scranton [the chair of the Festschrift Panel] were students of Wayne’s at the Pacific School of Religion and the Graduate Theological Union together, but she was much quicker than George. (Jana started her program a year later than I did and completed her Ph.D. well ahead of George.) Wayne also directed Jana in Berries Red, a one woman show. Her area of interest presently is the intersection of Homeletics and Theatre. Jana did her undergraduate theatre training under the direction of M. James Young at Wheaton College, and earned her Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary. |

He earned his MFA at Boston University under Harold Ehrensperger’s mentoring. He gave special note to Wayne’s significant contribution to that movement. The following paper is the full text from which those summary comments were made. |
